The continuum resources were designed to support an understanding that each individual in a Forest School session brings with them their own experiences of using fires, tools and other equipment. By being aware of where the individuals in your group are at on the continuum, you will be able to support their further development.
For example, when working with fire, the continuum would begin with offering experiences of blowing out candles, then move to lighting candles, then move to lighting a smudging stick, then move to exploring different kinds of lighting equipment, them move to lighting small fires for a Kelly kettle, then move to lighting small fires to keep warm, then move to lighting small fires to cook, then move to building and lighting bonfires.
This concept has been used on fire lighting training sessions and has now been adapted for the use of wood craft tools and techniques. Participants on the training have found these very useful when working with their client groups.
