Wood Craft Skills

The overall aim of this training was to provide the opportunity for children and young people aged 3 – 19, who participate in Forest School throughout Wales, to be involved in a range of practical creative wood craft skills projects.

Forest School Practitioners were invited to attend 2 day’s training in their region run by Scott Blytt-Jordens of Dragonfly Creations where they developed an understanding of wood, wood craft tools and their uses, thus gaining confidence in their own practical abilities.

Other outdoor educators, teachers, learning support assistants and play workers were then invited to attend 2 day’s training in north and south Wales with a focus on supporting children in the Foundation Phase.

Participants in the Foundation Phase training were introduced to the idea of a continuum in the use of specific tools or techniques. It is important to remember to begin where clients and practitioners feel comfortable and move towards more challenging skills.

Participants planned for and delivered their own wood craft projects with their client group, evaluating and feeding back to us on how it went.

Now Forest School Wales members can access the results of this training. We have created a bank of resources based on what was learnt.

Please Note:
Due to these resources being accessible to a wide range of practitioners including play workers and teachers who may not be forest School trained, we strongly advise everyone to read the Safe use and storage of tools before following any of these methods.

Neither Dragonfly Creations nor Forest School Wales can accept any legal responsibility for any harm, injury, damage, loss or prosecution resulting from the activities described.

Scott says: “Experience equals results… practice, practice, practice…‘failures’ develop learning experiences… build awareness… question and reflect.”

Feel free to attempt the ideas yourself and feed back about your experiences.

This Continuing Professional Development training augmented the initial OCN Level 3 Forest School Leaders Award and nurtured specific transferable skills. It was supported and funded by:
