Course Content:

This CPD course is designed for FS leaders and those interested in developing children’s skills using natural resources.

A great deal of work is being done in Foundation Phase relating to outdoor learning, where initiatives like Forest School fit perfectly into the Foundation Phase philosophy. However, there seems less available for older children. This course is designed to go some way in filling that gap.

Stick furniture making is an ideal vehicle to meet statutory requirements of designing and making artefacts with the added advantage of working outdoors using natural materials. It develops a range of literacy and numeracy skills that can be exploited by the leaders.

The course will take the participants through the process of designing a stool, collecting appropriate materials, using a whole range of tools and constructing a product.

Handouts based on the day’s activities plus help with ordering tools will be provided. The day is designed to be instructional but also fun, with an end product – an interesting piece of furniture to take away plus the skills to replicate the process with your children.

Tea and coffee will be available throughout the day. Participants will need to bring a packed lunch or use the university’s refectories on campus.  Due to the intensive nature of the input, the course will be limited to only 6 participants, which will ensure a high level of individual instruction.

Please note the two dates advertised will be completely separate sessions, both days running 9.30am – 4.30pm.

Those paying for the resources can take their stool home with them.

Course Tutor:

Dr. Martin Cook is a senior lecturer at Cardiff Metropolitan University. He is a member of the university’s outdoor learning team. He delivers Forest School training up to level 3 at the Cyncoed Campus of the university and also offers green woodworking courses and rustic furniture making courses.

On completion of the course you will receive a certificate to add to your portfolio.
